i don't know what is going on, but i'm eating like a king... a KING lately. and it hasn't cost me a penny! this is my free dinner line-up for this month:

yesterday - REEF (a free pharma dinner at a new upscale seafood restaurant in downtown)

tomorrow - RUTH'S CHRIS (courtesy of my good friend tn who is treating me and mk as a congratulatory dinner for our match)

next tue - BRENNAN'S OF HOUSTON (another pharma dinner)

thur, march 20th - MASSRAFF'S (glaucoma compliance dinner)

fri, march 21st - MORTON'S STEAKHOUSE (this one is still pending, but likely to happen)

crazy thing is that there's still another week of march left at the end of the month for more fine dining potentially..... i can't imagine that i'll ever like this again for free in a one month span!

i applaud our nation's greatest orchestra, the ny philharmonic, for their courage and generosity in bringing their talents to what is probably the most secluded nation in the world today - north korea.

maestro maazel said that maybe one day someone will compose a piece entitled "americans in pyongyang" just as gershwin composed "an american in paris". in the meantime, here's the ny philharmonic playing "arirang" in a truly moving performance:

speaking of classical music, something about young talent is inspirational. hats off to the new director of music of the los angeles philharmonic - gustavo dudamel. i think we might be looking at not just a "conducting animal" but quite possibly the next leonard bernstein. here's the young maestro conducting bernstein's "mambo" with the simon bolivar youth orchestra:

it also shows why we'd be better off with a democrat in office to hopefully help protect funds for medical research. we need to stop spending money on this war in iraq, get tougher immigration laws, bring about real healthcare reform that doesn't involve a small number of tax-paying citizens paying for the healthcare of a large number of uninsured illegal immigrants, and use whatever surplus that results to save medicare, medicaid, social security, and the lab work of clinician-scientists.

haven't written in this thing in a long time, largely because i've spent the last 6 months preparing for today. what is today, you ask? ah..... today was the day that ~900 people found out their fate. today was ophthalmology match day!

the hours went by slowly as i waited for the results, but finally the phone rang. i heard a familiar voice on the other end, and i'm SO happy to say that from 2009-2012, i'll have the good fortune of completing my ophthalmology residency at:

i'm FINALLY going back to ny/nj for GOOD. i'm going home. i'm going to columbia! God is good, amen?

saw this on an espn special while sitting in the airport recently, and it almost moved me to tears

we're living in a time when politicians, law makers, and administrators without any real experience "in the field" dictate what happens with our money. federal funding for medical research is at its lowest point in years and people don't realize that clinician-scientists and researchers spend more time writing grants than they do actually doing research that will cure retinal degeneration, treat cancer, prevent AIDS, etc.

so with that, i say props to people like jim valvano and organizations like the jimmy v foundation!

i can finally die a happy man. thank you, thank you, thank you m for a great meal (and my first time) at peter luger's steak house (what is considered by some as the best steak house in ny and even the country).
